Meet The Beast of Birch Hill #newrelease @naomi_jay #rotg #ff @evernightpub

Happy Monday, folks.  I have the talented Naomi Clark on my blog today with her new release The Beast of Birch Hill - Enjoy!

******

Blurb

Wildlife photographer and cryptozoology blogger Emma Jordan came to Birch Hill expecting to find another urban legend. The rumours of a big cat stalking the woods around this quiet town surely had to be just that - rumours. But when the evidence starts to pile up that Birch Hill really does have a killer cat on the loose, Emma finds herself caught in a confusing game of cat and mouse. And her blossoming relationship with Abi Blakely might just be pushing her further into danger.

Emma awoke in a tangle of sheets to the sound of running water. She sat up, finger-combing her knotted hair, and looked around for Abi. The door to the en suite was open and she could just make out Abi's silhouette behind the frosted glass shower door. Her pussy throbbed, an almost Pavlovian reaction, and for a second she contemplated slipping in there with her.
Then her phone, discarded along with her jeans last night, started ringing. Cursing, but unable to ignore it, she leaned over the side of the bed to grab it. An unfamiliar number flashed on the screen.
            “Hello?”
“What happened last night? Where were you?”
It took her sleep-hazed brain a second to recognize the voice, and a second longer to realize Jed wasn't asking her about her sex life. “Something came up. I couldn't make it out there. Why do you care anyway?” she asked, realizing she sounded rude just a little too late. “I mean, we hadn't planned to go up to the woods together, after all.”
“No, but I went anyway. You city folks, you think you know the woods, you think you're gonna be safe, but you don't know shit, so I went to keep an eye on you. And guess what?”
“You wasted your night? I'm sorry, Jed, but—”
“There was another kill!” he said, almost triumphantly.
            Emma stilled. “A cat kill?”
“That's right. Big old deer, just slaughtered and left on the trail. If you'd been out there with your camera like you said, you'd have caught it all.”
“There's no guarantee of that,” Emma said. “But I'd like to come and have a look now, see if there are any more paw prints or anything.”
“Well, the deer isn't going anywhere,” Jed said. “Meet you at the trail's start in an hour, if you can make time for it.”
He hung up without waiting for her reply. Emma swore softly and tossed the phone across the bed just as Abi emerged from the shower. The sight of her wrapped in a mint green towel, her dark hair dripping water down her cleavage, was briefly distracting.
            “What's up?” Abi asked.
“Jed just called. He found a deer kill in the woods – the Beast strikes again, I guess. He's annoyed I wasn't out there to capture it all on tape.”
Abi frowned. “That can't be right.”
            “What can't?”
“The Beast, the cat – I mean...it can't...didn't you just go see a kill yesterday? Cats don't hunt that often, surely?”
“This one seems to be killing for fun,” Emma said, climbing out of bed. “So I guess I should go take a look.”
Abi clutched at her towel, expression worried. “If you did find it, or get it on film or whatever, what then? What would you do?”
Emma shrugged. “I wouldn't do anything except blog about it. I'm not out to capture the Beast or kill it or anything. But if I do get proof of an alien big cat out here, I want to talk about it!” Her initial lack of enthusiasm at Jed's call was fading away. The thought of uncovering a mystery, even a small one, and sharing the answer with the world, was irresistible. And sure, there would be a mundane explanation – escaped zoo animal, abandoned exotic pet – but it would still be part of the bigger puzzle. That was worth getting excited about.
She went to kiss Abi as she passed to use the shower, but Abi barely seemed to notice. She was still frowning, staring at the bed they'd shared last night as if it suddenly just materialized there.
“Abi? You okay?” Emma touched her arm lightly and Abi jumped.
“No. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I'm fine. I just...hey.” She looked up at Emma, chewing her lip. “Could I come with you?”
“You wanna come see a dead deer?”
Abi smiled. “Sure. Maybe I can make it into dinner later.”
Emma laughed, but a touch of unease crept over her. The feeling didn't make sense, so she tried to ignore it. “I don't see why not. It's probably not going to be any fun though, with Jed there.”
“That's fine. I never expect dead things to be fun.”
About the Author
Naomi likes writing, perfume, fancy tea, and unfathomable monsters from the dark spaces between the stars, not necessarily in that order. She has been writing stories ever since she learned how to write, but is still trying to master the art of biography writing. When she's not dealing with werewolves, demons, or sea monsters, she's hanging out with her cat and probably watching a documentary about Bigfoot. If the cat isn't available, she's with her fiancé watching cookery shows and silently plotting her next book.

Usually if I want to set a story somewhere more exotic than Cambridge, I need to spend a lot of time on Wikipedia and looking at pictures on Google. I got lucky when I decided to write a book set in Paris, because it just so happened that in January 2010 my then-boyfriend (now fiance) decided to take me there.

We were staying in a beautiful hotel in Montmartre, practically on the doorstep of the Moulin Rouge. It's a colourful, crazy part of Paris and I knew immediately this was where Ayla and Shannon would be staying in BLOOD HUNT. The vibrancy and variety of the district, housing everything from upscale bistros to gloriously tacky sex shops, was the perfect setting for my urban wolves to take on the mysterious, deadly villain of the book.

I wanted to really capture the spirit of the area in BLOOD HUNT, but I also wanted to make this Ayla's experience of Paris, not mine. So whilst I was delighted to get to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night and see Paris spread out before me from a great (great) height, Ayla was less keen – wolves and heights don't always mix! And whilst Ayla spent a lot of time exploring the Parisian catacombs, it was somewhere I never visited (so yes, I did have to spend some time on Wikipedia for this book).

The one experience we did share was a visit to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, despite Ayla's fear of heights. I'll always have a very special place in my heart for the Arc, as this is where my boyfriend took me to propose, and a more perfect setting you can't imagine (we'll skim over the part where I threw up, that's another story and kind of detracts from the romance). Ayla and Shannon don't get engaged at the top of the Arc, but I tried to convey the sense of wonder I felt staring out over Paris that night and let my characters feel it too. Hopefully it worked and when you read the book, you'll feel just the same way.

Now, if anyone wants to take me to New Orleans, Mexio, or Tokyo in the name of "research," please let me know...

Blood Hunt

Ayla Hammond is taking on Paris.

Hoping for a romantic getaway in the City of Lights with her girlfriend, Shannon, she finds a city under the dark thrall of Le Monstre.

Getting caught up in mystery and murder was the last thing Ayla and Shannon expected to find in the City of Love, but as the body count grows and tension rises between Parisian werewolves and humans they find themselves stalked by an unknown terror.

What is Le Monstre and why does it make Ayla's wolf want to turn tail and run? Can it be stopped before they become its next victims?

Naomi Clark

Naomi Clark lives in Cambridge and is a mild-mannered office worker by day, but a slightly crazed writer by night. She has a perfectly healthy obsession with giant sea creatures and a preference for vodka-based cocktails. When she's not writing, Naomi is probably either reading or watching 80s cartoon shows, and sometimes she manages to do all three at once.

Do I have a treat for you all today!

So, without further ado, I give you Naomi. So glad you could join us today!

Thanks for having me today, Doris, and hello everyone! Nice to be here and be able to talk a bit about my new Free Read from Evernight, BOUND BY NIGHT.

Q. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Well, the basics are - I live in Cambridge in the UK with my fiance, two snakes, and a noisy cat. I work for Cambridge University, but that's just to pay the bills. My passion is writing, and I spend every spare minute I have doing that. When I need a break from the computer, I make perfumes and watch terrible films!

You make perfumes? How cool!

Q. What made you write ‘this’ story?

The hero's name came first - I saw the name Daghan somewhere and fell in love with it. I got a pretty good picture of him straight away - big, blonde, beautiful, with a mysterious and tortured past... my favourite kind of hero! Once I had him, the rest of the story fell into place around him.

Q. Tell us about your cover.

Pretty hot, I think! That's Daghan in all his glory. You'd never guess he was a monk, would you? ;)

Nope, you'd certainly wouldn't guess that from the cover!

Q. Describe a typical day’s writing for us

I get to my office about 8am, and I have breakfast and write for an hour on my netbook. Lunch time is another half hour of writing. I can usually get about 2000 words written a day this way. In the evenings I'm either writing some more, or editing. I try to give myself an evening off once a week to catch up with friends or visit family, but most of the time...I'd rather be writing!

Q. What inspires you?

Everything from dreams to mythology and folklore, to news stories, to music...A lot of the time it's less about finding inspiration and more about figuring out which bits of inspiration will make a working story.

Q. If you weren’t a writer what would you be?

I have no idea. I think I would probably be working in mental health care in some capacity - it's something I'm very interested in.

Q. Do your characters ever surprise you?

Oh, all the time! As much as I know I'm in charge, I don't plan very far ahead with my writing, so I never really know what's going to happen until I actually write it. So there are always surprises! It's what keeps me interested.

Q. What could not do without when you’re writing?

Background noise. I don't care if it's music, TV, or just people talking. I find working in silence very strange.

Q. What words of wisdom do you have for the aspiring authors out there?

Make sure you read a lot as well as write - it will help you be a better writer! Find a good critique group or beta reader to help you, and most of all, write what you want to read. Be in love with your stories!

Q. Where do you see yourself in ten year’s time?

I'd love to be writing full time and living in a house by the sea...That's the dream!

So with you there :-)

Q. Do you have a favourite quote?

"It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by" - Vita Sackville.

Q. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?

Not really. There are definitely days where it's harder than others to get going, but if I can't find a way forward with my main project, I usually have something on the side to work on, and switching to a different project will sometimes shake the creative juices up and get me going!

Q. What other books can your readers look forward to?

My  next release is the first in an urban fantasy trilogy called NIGHT AND CHAOS. It's  bit different - no vampires, no werewolves, but a ton of Indian mythology, dysfunctional families, reunited lovers, and a very hot alpha male hero. That's out June 1st from Damnation Books. I'm very excited about it!

Q. And finally can you share an excerpt with us?

Sure! Here's a taste of what you can except from BOUND BY NIGHT:

She kissed him then. She didn’t know if she was pure, or if their union could lift his curse. She didn’t know if it mattered. They were here together, two lost souls seeking sanctuary, and she wanted to offer him all she had to give. So she kissed him deeply, pressing her bare body to his, feeling the strength of him beneath his robes. He slid his hands down her back to cup her rear and lift her to her tiptoes, flexing his hips so his shaft pressed against her. Adeline felt herself grow hot and slick with desire, and she fumbled to pull his heavy robes away.
He laughed roughly and stepped away from her to do it himself. Beneath the discarded robe he wore a simple shirt and breeches, but before Adeline could reach for them, he gripped her hips and dropped to his knees. Holding her firm, he kissed his way up her inner thighs, gentle and slow. He drew patterns on her hips and across her buttocks with his fingers, lazy trails that sparked a desperate need in Adeline for something fiercer. She tangled her fingers in his silky hair, throwing her head back in pleasure as he made his way up to the juncture of her thighs. He licked and kissed at the sensitive skin there, shying away from her aching core but teasing, promising wicked pleasures to come. He traced the curve and crease of her buttocks, one finger slipping over her delicate rear entrance and making her gasp in surprise, before he found her clit. He swept his finger over that pulsing place, increasing the pressure little by little, until Adeline was sure her legs would give out.
