His Sweet Girl - A Valentine Flash

He loved her carefree giggle. It hadn't changed, not even after all those years, and he pulled her tighter against his chest.

"Let me go, you silly old coot. I've got a dinner to prepare."

"Dinner can wait. This can't, so stop arguing woman, and let me hold you. The grandkids will be here soon, and then we’ll have no peace."

He felt her surrender in the way she snuggled into him, and sighed.

"Have I told you how much I love you today?" he asked.

She giggled again, her breath a soothing kiss on his weathered skin, and he closed his eyes and savored the moment. The years fell away and they were seventeen again, stealing kisses on her parent's porch, their feelings all new and precious. He'd known then that she was the only woman for him.

"I love you too, but only for today." He could hear the smile in her beloved voice, and his lips twitched in answer. Back then, they had only made plans for each day, their future as uncertain as the troubled times they lived in.

She snuggled closer and he dropped a kiss in her hair.

"You're so beautiful, old girl."

"Hah, you always say that. Clearly it's time to get you new glasses."

He framed her face and she grew still in his arms.

"You will always be the most beautiful woman to me, Edna. Happy Valentines, my sweet girl."

Have a wonderful Valentines, folks! And a special kiss to my hubby, who still tells me he loves me every single day.
