The slam of the front door set her heart aflutter in anticipation. His text had been short and specific.
Coming home early – you know how to greet me.
He had left this morning without acknowledging the significance of the day, and she hadn't been able to hide her disappointment completely. He wouldn’t have forgotten—he never did. She had been on edge all day, however, not sure what to expect on his return.
She still didn't know. Keeping her on edge was his specialty. Even now, he did not come straight to the kitchen. The hard tiles dug into her knees, sharpening her awareness as she listened to footsteps, and tried to track the movements through the house.
Eyes trained firmly on the floor she saw his polished shoes first.
"Such a good pet. Come and greet me." The approval in his voice washed over her and his heated gaze caressed her naked skin as she crawled towards him, all her attention focused on him.
He dropped to his knees with a smile and brushed his lips across hers.
"Happy Anniversary," he whispered." I brought you a surprise."
The other set of foot prints she'd heard now made perfect sense.
