The scream echoed through the still air and he
changed direction mid-leap. Primal and urgent it called to his wolf like
nothing else could. The female that scream belonged to was in trouble, mortal
danger in fact. He lifted his nose into the breeze and her scent hit him in the
gut.
It couldn't be, not here, not now, but reason never
came into this. He crashed through the forest, gathering speed as he went, her
fear driving him on. By the time he came to the scene of her attack, it was all
over. The coppery scent of destruction was everywhere, and he sniffed the
bloody knife left next to tattered women's clothing.
Several trails led away from the scene, and nose to
the ground, he followed the one that made his heart beat faster. Her scent
weakened the further she stumbled and he picked up his pace.
There in the clearing, lay his mate. He bounded
across, careful not to startle her. She was too still and cold and he did the
only thing he could do. Wrapped his body around her and willed her to breathe.
His wolf whined in joy when she stirred and hugged
him.
